Mini Meditations Can Meet Your Needs

Most people don’t know that mini meditations can meet all your needs when you simply create just few minutes per day to do them.

Mini Meditations

Mini Meditations

“I move through life with grace and ease, and time expands to meet my needs.” A wise acquaintance once relayed that mantra—and it holds special significance in today’s fast-paced world. It may feel like you spend your days running from Point A to Point B with nary a spare minute to breathe, but a study out of the University of Pennsylvania shows that carving out a mere 12 minutes a day to do just that—intentionally breathe—can go a long way toward improving your mood. In addition, meditating can help you get better quality sleep, show more kindness towards others, and reduce inflammation.

Here are a series of mini-meditations you can call on throughout your day when you’re feeling frazzled and need to find your center.

Greeting the Day: Set an Intention

Meet the day by sitting quietly in a chair with your feet firmly on the floor to ground you. Staring straight ahead, take three deep breaths and begin to envision the morning washing over you, taking with it any residual stress or anxiety that might be bubbling up. Pay close attention to your breath and visualize how the day will unfold for you, setting your positive intention. Stay centered in this space for a few more minutes, then stand and finish by standing and stretching your arms overhead; or, if you like, do one sun salutation.

Commuting with Consciousness: Let Go

To avoid the bubbling of negative emotions that often come with a traffic-packed ride to work, return to your breath and tune into your senses. Every time a negative emotion bubbles up, acknowledge it, release it, and focus on something that ignites your senses; i.e.: the grounded feeling of sitting or the smell of fresh air coming through the window.

Midday Mindfulness: Practice Discipline

When you sit down to eat lunch, do it with intention and resist the urge to gulp it down and get on with your work. Carve out 20 minutes to sit quietly and focus on your meal. Say a small prayer of gratitude for the food you are about to enjoy and make a point of chewing each bite and breathing in between. You’ll also want to make a point of purposely putting your utensils down on occasion. Eating in this manner requires discipline, but it helps you find a restorative center to your day.

 Bedtime Sequence: Show Yourself Compassion

As you get ready to go to bed, try this calming ritual which is especially beneficial if your mind has a tendency to race. Lay on your back and take several deep breaths through your nose and out your mouth. Starting with your feet and moving up to your head, check in with all the points of your body, noticing any sensations, moving them slightly, and consciously releasing any tension you are holding. It’s unlikely you’ll make it as far as your head before you’ve drifted off to a deep sleep.

Small Tweaks to Your Diet Equals Amazing Health Benefits

By making small tweaks to your diet, you can realize some amazing health benefits over time. Here’s a list of 20 simple food swaps that will put you on a fast-track to eating nutritiously—and deliciously!

Instead of potato or corn chips…

Go for organic popcorn (not microwave) or roasted, salted pumpkin seeds (pepitas) or sunflower seeds.  Sweet potato chips are also yummy!

Why? You still get the salty crunch you’re after while getting lots more nutrients

Sweet Potato Chips

Sweet Potato Chips

Instead of white potatoes…

Go for sweet potatoes

Why? They’re packed with antioxidants and have a lower glycemic index than their white cousins

Instead of conventional apples and celery…

Go for organic apples and celery

Why? These crops are the most heavily sprayed with pesticides; avoid conventional at all costs

Instead of wheat bread…

Go for sprouted wheat bread/wraps or gluten-free options

Why? Unsprouted wheat and gluten are tough for the body to digest

Instead of white rice

Go for brown rice

Why? There’s more fiber, more flavor, and it’s less likely to cause a spike in blood sugar

Instead of brown rice

Go for quinoa or amaranth

Why? These have more protein than brown rice

Instead of canned beans…

Go for dried beans, soaked

Why? Most cans contain BPA; soaked beans are easier to digest and you control the salt content

Instead of scrambled eggs…

Go for scrambled non-GMO tofu

Why? Many people are unknowingly allergic to eggs; here’s a high-protein breakfast alternative

Instead of peanuts or peanut butter…

Go for almonds and almond butter

Why? Peanuts are heavily sprayed with pesticides and can harbor mold that give off toxins (aflatoxins); peanuts are also slightly acidic whereas almonds are slightly alkaline

Instead of conventional beef…

Go for grass-fed beef

Why? When the ratio of omega-6 fats to omega-3 fats is more than 4:1, people have more health problems. Grain-fed beef’s ratio is 20:1; grass-fed beef’s ratio is 3:1

Instead of farmed salmon…

Go for wild salmon

Why? Farmed salmon has less omega-3 per ounce, 16 times the toxins of wild, and a whack of weird additives

Instead of commercial salad dressing…

Go for extra-virgin olive oil + sea salt + fresh cracked black pepper

Why? Commercial dressing contains all kinds of additives not found in nature; best to stay away

Instead of soy sauce…

Go for wheat-free tamari

Why? It’s a kinder, gentler, slightly less salty soy sauce; no gluten means it’s easier to digest

Instead of table salt…

Go for Celtic or Himalayan sea salt or Herbamare

Why? It’s not stripped of natural trace minerals magnesium and calcium; Herbamare includes fresh herbs so a little packs a flavorful punch

Instead of sugar…

Go for brown rice syrup, raw honey, or natural stevia plant

Why? Evil on so many levels, refined sugar has been robbed of all beneficial nutrients the original sugar cane or beet contains. It also lacks chromium which is a chemical needed to maintain healthy blood sugar levels; all-natural options are always the better choice!

Instead of canola oil…

Go for coconut oil

Why? It remains stable during high-heat cooking making it ideal for baking and cooking

Instead of cow’s milk…

Go for unsweetened rice, almond, or hemp milk

Why? Many people are unknowingly allergic to cow’s milk; the alternatives are not phlegm-inducing

Instead of coffee…

Go for Teechino

Why? This caffeine-free alternative that’s a blend of herbs, grains, fruits, and nuts brews up like coffee and has a similar aroma and taste. You get a boost from the nutrients, not stimulants

Instead of soda…

Go for kombucha

Why? This fermented drink is slightly sweet but low in carbs and loaded with probiotics that help to enhance the good bacteria in your gut

Instead of tap water

Go for filtered or spring water

Why? Filtered water takes out a portion of the contaminants in tap water, but not all; your best bet is to try to drink natural spring water filtered from Mother Nature!

***BONUS SWAP***

This is a big one—instead of eating out, eat in! You’ll realize the best health benefits of all if you make that one change.

Sweet On You: The Real Truth on Natural Sweeteners

By now you likely know how detrimental highly processed, granulated white sugar is to your health. If you need a refresher, here are some of the many ways white sugar wreaks havoc on your biochemistry, courtesy of UCSF’s Dr. Robert Lustig, a crusader against sugar and author of Fat Chance:

Sugar contributes to obesity

  • Sugar contributes to insulin resistance and diabetes
  • Sugar is addictive and toxic
  • Sugar makes you want to eat more—and move less!
The Truth About Natural Sweeteners

The Real Truth About Natural Sweeteners

If sugar is this harmful, it makes good sense to minimize or eliminate it altogether. But some occasions just call for a sweet treat! In those instances, you CAN have your cake and eat it too—with these 5 sweet, all-natural alternatives:

1. Honey

Raw honey has myriad health-promoting qualities. It contains natural antioxidants, although the quantity does vary across varieties (buckwheat honey reportedly delivers the most). Honey is also chock-full of enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Note that baking with raw honey will destroy many of the nutrients in honey. If you want to use it to flavor your tea or coffee, wait until your beverage has cooled enough to drink.

Sugar substitute: In dressings, and slaws; warm beverages

 2. Blackstrap Molasses

Blackstrap molasses is a sweetener that is actually good for you—it’s high in antioxidants and several health-promoting trace minerals that are difficult to find in other foods, such as: iron, calcium, copper, manganese, potassium, and magnesium. Opt for unsulphured blackstrap molasses as it doesn’t contain the processing chemical to which some people are sensitive. Unsulphured means it’ll have a cleaner and more clarified taste.

Sugar substitute: Use in place of brown sugar or when you want to impart a slightly smoky flavor. Great in baked beans and gingerbread.

 3. Coconut Sugar

Proponents argue coconut sugar tends to be less refined than granulated sugar; they say it also contains minerals like magnesium, potassium zinc and iron. In addition, coconut sugar has been touted to have a lower glycemic index than the uber-refined white stuff, which means that it can cause a less dramatic spike in blood sugar. Since studies on this sugar are largely unavailable, you need to take these claims with a grain of salt. As always, moderation is key!

Sugar substitute: Can be used as a 1:1 substitute for sugar in baking and cooking. You can also find it in syrup form; in that case, adjust your measurement in baking to ¾ cup for 1 cup sugar, reduce liquid by 2 tbsp for each cup and reduce cooking temperature by 25ºF.

4. Date Sugar

This may be the rock star of the group. Made from ground dates, this sweetener delivers all the nutrients in dates, including potassium and calcium—and is similar in healthful polyphenols as green tea! But that’s just part of the story: Date sugar is also low in calories, helpful for constipation, and makes you feel full longer. Look for varieties that have one ingredient only.

Sugar substitute: Yummy in bars and cookies, substitute this way: for every one cup of sugar, use 2/3 cup of date sugar.

5. Stevia

Derived from a plant with sweet leaves, it doesn’t get much more natural than this. The glycosides in the leaves of the Stevia Rebaudiana plant account for its incredible sweetness.

Stevia is calorie-free, and the powdered concentrate is 300 times sweeter than sugar. Stevia is widely used all over the world and is becoming more commonly found in the U.S. Stevia can help keep blood sugar levels in check and despite being very sweet, it doesn’t contribute to cavities.

Sugar substitute: A little stevia goes a LONG way. A fraction of the amount and you’ll have ample sweetness. You can even grow your own!

Above all, for optimal health, try to keep your sugar consumption down to 15-25 grams per day. This means you may have to stop at one cookie, but it doesn’t mean you need to cut out all of the sweetness from your life.

Finding Flow: Opening Up to the Universe

Finding Flow

Finding Flow: Opening Up to the Universe

Up to 15 percent of Americans say they never achieve a flow. Why is that? Surprisingly, there are real criteria for meeting this often elusive but blissful state of being where time seems to slow down, nothing else seems to matter, and your talents and skills are put to their optimal use.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the founding Co-Director of the Quality of Life Research Center at Claremont Graduate University, which focuses on the studies of positive psychology, has done extensive research on the topic and explains it this way. You find flow when your skills are fully involved in meeting a challenge that is just about manageable. If your skills don’t meet the challenge, you’ll be in a place of arousal that won’t allow you to get into flow—instead, that sparks a signal that there’s more to learn.

On the flip side, if a task isn’t challenging enough, you find yourself in a comfortable place of control, but because you can become bored in that area, you’ll also fall short of finding flow. For example, if you are a skilled cook with a passion for healthy eating but preparing dinner feels like drudgery, raise the bar on your menus and watch as you find your sweet spot! Becoming aware of how you move throughout your day with these variables in mind can help you achieve flow more easily.

Some say there is a direct correlation between being in a state of flow and tapping into—and expanding—your consciousness. Author, motivational speaker, and life coach Gabby Bernstein teaches how to access a state of flow by tapping into your inner guide or “ing” and letting go of limiting beliefs that no longer serve you. In her book, Spirit Junkie (based on Marianne Williamson’s A Course in Miracles), Bernstein lays out a plan for getting into the flow of life, which among other things involve:

Choosing Love Over Fear—By making love your default, you purge the urge to fall back on fear and negativity, and create ample space for positive energy.

Tuning into your “ing”—Without quieting your mind and asking for help from your inner guide, you’ll never tune into your true passion. This is an essential ingredient for flow.

Forgiving—Letting go of any toxic feelings you may have towards others and viewing relationships as assignments from the universe help you grow, prosper, and bring alignment and authenticity into your life.

When you are able to move through these important stages Bernstein says you can come to expect miracles from the universe. And when miracles happen, you know you’re in the flow.

Link Between Healing & Freedom

The Link Between Healing & Freedom

Have you ever felt stuck in life?  I know I have many times.  Having grown up abused and feeling abandoned and victimized constantly, it’s a wonder I made it out alive! Many people have wondered how I managed a very successful career as a sexual abuse abuse investigator and mental health counselor and the answer is “Easy!”  In essence, I wanted to give to others what I desired for myself as a child….healing, transformation and freedom.

Saving children from the hands of harmful people was my forte while empowering the mother’s who needed mentoring and guidance.  My purpose was clear and my work was my service to the World.  After 12 years of doing this work I became burnt out.  I knew I needed a change but wasn’t sure what to do.  I had always had a belief in God but wasn’t sure this could help me in any practical way.  But when my own efforts to create transformation and change failed miserably, the time arrived to ask God or Spirit for guidance and advise.

Today I life a completely different life.  How I achieved this is both a magical and mind boggling experience.  There was pain.  There was joy.  There was love and there was fear. One thing was for sure, honoring my body, mind and spiritual needs led me in the  direction of my life long dreams.

So often we think we need to wait to live and love our lives.  This is just not true. The way to transformation is incremental and often goes unrecognized. The following are a few ways you can transform you life and move away from pain and fear into peace and prosperity:

1)  Do something FUN every day!

2)  Smile and see how the world changes in relationship to you.

3)  Connect with your heart and let it speak what it desires

4)  Take time to breathe and enjoy the present moment.

5)  Set very clear specific intentions that come from your heart.

For me,  even when I was sick and in pain, or stuck in fear, I tried to find a smile.  Doing what I loved transformed all of my pain and it can do the same for you.  What you can also do is choose the path you desire.  Be very specific and clear. When negativity jumps into your mind, (and it will) recognize it and release it.  When it jumps into yourmind again, recognize and release it.  And do this over and over and over and over again.

Eventually negativity will become your friend showing you the path that is already been paved and waiting for you.  For example, when I feel fear I know there is something to be released.  Once released, I am free to move forward.  Releasing negativity is the same as choosing the path of love.  It will help you heal all of your challenges : physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, relational and even financial!

I set out on a path of yoga and self discovery to heal my bulimia and later my bruised brain.  I ended up nourishing my Soul writing in the sunshine and studying with best selling authors and healers of all kinds, healing my life and touching the lives of others along the way.

My path now is one of divine love and compassionate healing as I receive messages from Spirit and remain a channel for infinite intelligence, divine wisdom and touching the hearts and Souls of those in need.

You can read my story of transformation in the upcoming book:

“Pebbles in the Pond : Transforming Lives One Story at a Time “  Wave 2

with World Renowned Authors Neale Donald Walsh, Barbara Marx Hubbard,

Lisa Nichols, Bo Eason and more!

If you are living the life you truly desire….yeah!  Keep up our divine work.  And if you need

a little spiritual or practical pick me up you can read about how I transformed naturally

as I share my chapter in the Pebbles book titled:

“Intentional Transformation and Your Power to Be Free”

In the meantime, begin setting daily intentions and watch your life unfold in ways you will

find magical, inspiring and maybe even unimaginable!

Sending You Divine Love & Peace,

MaryJo

A Channeled Poem: The Love I Be Divine

I Feel InsideIn trying to describe the events that took place at a recent writers retreat at the Gramercy Mansion in Baltimore, Maryland, I quickly realized that the experience was beyond normal and even extraordinary comprehension and description.

Yesterday, while lying in shavasana pose during my yoga practice I asked the Divine for a way to gracefully describe my transformational healing experience at the writers retreat.

These are the words that flowed from my heart onto the page:

Words Cannot Describe
The Love I Feel Inside
The Way You Made Me Feel
My Life It Has Been Healed

I Feel Inside

Words Cannot Describe
The Possibilities I Now See
The Peace, The Love, The Freedom
Now I Can Simply BE

Our Journey Indeed Magical
Pure Alchemy

Pure Alchemy
The Breath We Took
The Tears We Cried
The Love We Shared
It’s All Inside

I Stand In Grace
I Am Amazed
I Am You and You Are Me
Together WE Be Lovingly

Stand In Grace

Words Cannot Describe
The Love I Be
Divine

Love Inside

Om Mani Padme Hum
Om Mani Padme Hum

(The Ancient Mantra of Compassion)

Thank you to my Soul Sisters & Brothers for touching my heart, transforming my soul and showing me the way back home.

With Love, Brilliance & Bright Sunshine,

The Power of Intentions

It was October 2009 and I was in NYC at a Hay House Event listening to Greg Braden talk about the changing energies of the Universe. I was new to the Law of Intention but knew I needed to do something different if my life was going to take a new path.

In case you aren’t familiar with Greg’s work, he is the author of The Divine Matrix and many other amazing metaphysical books that use sciece to back his metaphysical and somewhat spiritual claims.

Gregs message at that event was simple. Harness the higher vibe energies of the coming years (2009 to 2012) so that at the end of the Mayan calendar, our lives could be dramatically different.

On that day my heart and soul committed to harnessing the energies of the time so I could create magic in my life.

Today, I write from the small island of San Pedro, Belize. I am here to finish writing a chapter for an upcoming anthology and to ccmplete the first edit of my upcoming book to be released in the New Year.

As I sat on the small eight seater plane that flew over the Caribbean to bring me to this beautiful place I thought of the advice Greg gave three years ago. “Make changes today to harness the energies and align with something new at the end of 2012.”

Going through change sometimes makes it hard to notice progress and success. This month as I write, I know the power of Greg’s message.

To begin seeing changes in your life I invite you to set a simple daily intention spoken from your heart. Then watch for signs of manifestation as you make your way to creating all you desire for your life.  The only thing that can stop you from making your dreams come true is simply you.

With Love,

MaryJo

My Mediumship

I am an intuitive healer, a medium, spiritual guide and visionary.  I brilliantly empowers women from around the world who struggle with life debilitating challenges including chronic disease, addiction and destructive thought patterns to experience healing, transformation and the freedom to develop a peaceful and purposeful path for their lives.

My path to become a force for divine healing became very clear when I discovered my intuitive and psychic gifts while recovering from a brain injury in December 2009.  Raised strict Catholic, I have always sensed the presence of Spirit, gracefully questioned religious dogma and consider myself to be mystical Buddhist Christian helping others to realize that divine guidance and pure prosperity are simply a breath away.

I am a graduate of the Arthur Ford International Academy of Mediumship, the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and hold a master’s degree from the prestigious St. Bonaventure University in New York.

I am a pioneer in applying the “I Am” consciousness to the process of eating disorder recovery and addiction.

In closing I share that my personal recovery from bulimia and a brain injury opened me to become a channel for divine guidance.

Now known as “The Mystic Messenger” I deliver words from Spirit in both the written and spoken word to inspire and empower people to move forward and set their souls’ free.
